Madison 14U comes back from seven run deficit to beat Flandreau

The Madison 14U baseball team went 2-0 in the first day of the Region 3A VFW baseball tournament. Maison opened play with a 3-1 win over Volga on Monday.

Madison opened the scoring in the 3rd inning, bringing in a run on a balk. Volga added a run themselves in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch. From there, starting pitchers Henry Veenhof and Damon Uecker held the offense in check. In the top of the 8th inning, Kaysen Gust hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Volga and scored Luke Johnson. Veenhof then lined a ball to right, allowing Gust to tag up and make the score 3-1 Madison. Relief pitcher Brody Fink slammed the door in the bottom of the 8th to secure the win.

Veenhof went 6 innings on the mound, giving up 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 11. Gust and Brody Nielsen had the only hits in the game for Maidson.

The Madison team then took on Flandreau in the 2nd game of the Region Tournament. Flandreau jumped out to a 8-1 lead in through the first 4 innings, touching Gavin Fink and James Hernandez for 4 runs each. But Madison chipped away at the lead with 3 runs in the 5th, thanks in part to RBI doubles from Payton Wold and Oakley Mees.

Down four entering the final frame, Madison got early base runners in the 7th with a pair of walks. Mees then reached on an error that made it 5-8. Following an out and a hit batter, Joe Christensen reached on an error that scored two more runs. Johnson then hit an RBI sac fly to right that tied the game at 8 each. Mees then came in to pitch the bottom of the 7th, and struck out the side to force extra innings. In the 8th, Flandreau committed two more errors, helping Madison score four runs to win the game 12-8.

Wold and Gust each scored 3 runs in the win. Mees picked up the win, striking out 4 over two innings.

The Region 3A Tournament continues today, with Volga playing Flandreau at 5pm. The winner plays Madison again, with Madison needing to win once in two games to win the Region title.
