Flandreau, Canova and the Mudcats win Cornbelt openers Sunday

Sunday marked the opening night of Cornbelt League baseball for the summer. 

The Flandreau Cardinals opened their season with a 13-3 win over the Salem Cubs. The Cardinals trailed 2-1 before scoring four runs to take the lead in the 3rd. Flandreau scored 8 more runs in the 8th inning to end the game on the mercy rule. Jacob Patterson had 3 hits and 3 runs for the Cardinals. Jordan Gesling had 3 RBI, while Nate Kneebone drove in 2 runs. Aiden Ladd, Luke Gassman, and Bret Severtson combined to strike out 9 Salem batters. Luke Loudenburg led the Cubs with 2 hits and an RBI.

The Defending Class B State Champion Dell Rapids Mudcats picked up a 7-5 win over the Colman A’s. Kris Regas had a solo homerun for the Mudcats. 

The Humboldt-Hartford Gamecocks opened their season with an 11-4 win over the Madison Broncos. Joe Hansich and Drew Maras hit home runs in the win, while Greg Biagi had a homer for the Broncos. 

The Canova Gang hung on for a 5-4 win over Lennox. Derek Miller got the win on the mound, while also driving in a run. Garret Gassman had 2 RBI for Canova.
