First Weekend of the Cornbelt District Tournament is in the Books
The Cornbelt District Tournament got underway this weekend, with eight games over the course of three days.
Play opened Friday with the Colman A’s picking up an 8-1 over the Flandreau Blue Teal. Colman scored five runs in the 7th inning to pull away for the win. TJ Silliman had 2 hits and scored twice for the A’s. Corey Roach was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs. Roach also picked up the win, tossing a complete game and allowing just 6 hits with 17 strikeouts. Gage Sharping took the loss after giving up 7 runs on 8 hits with 4 walks.
In the late game Friday the Flandreau Cardinals came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Humboldt-Hartford Wood Ducks 9-4. Flandreau won the game despite being out-hit 10 to 7. Austin King and Clint Denboer each had two hits for the Wood Ducks. King also drove in 2 runs. The Wood Ducks pitchers struggled with their control, as four pitchers combined to walk 9 batters. Logan Larson took the loss after allowing 5 runs on 4 hits with 5 walks over 5 innings. The Wood Ducks also committed 4 errors in the field.
Keith Cutler had 2 hits with 2 runs scored for the Cardinals. Jacob Patterson scored 3 times, and Grant Heib drove in 2 runs. Zach Wallner threw a complete game for the win, giving up 4 runs on 10 hits with 12 strikeouts.
Saturday’s quarterfinal games started with the Salem Cubs defeating the #3 seed Humboldt-Hartford Gamecocks. Salem starter Luck Loudenburg held the Gamecocks to 3 runs on 2 hits over 5 innings. Hakeim Yatim hit a 2-run homer and Tyler Earls had 2 hits in the Salem win. Cam Quigley had 2 hits with 2 runs scored for Humboldt-Hartford. Cole Barthel took the loss, after giving up 7 runs on 7 hits over 6 innings.
Drew Sweeter drove in four runs on two hits to lead PBR to a 16-6 win over the Madison Broncos, in the 2nd game of the quarterfinals. Sweeter hit a 2-run home run, and had 4 RBI in the game. Matt Gillogly also hit a homer and drove in 3. Matt Burpee and Ty Jorgenson each hit solo homers for the Broncos.
The third game of the day saw the number one seed Dell Rapids Mudcats hit 4 homers in a 10-0 win over the Colman A’s. Carter Gullickson hit 2 homers, Mark Abrahamson and Kole Zimmerman had a homer each as well. Kris Regas racked up 14 strikeouts over seven innings.
The final game of the quarterfinals saw the Canova Gang overcome an early 3-0 deficit for an 18-5 win over the Flandreau Cardinals. JaColby Anderson hit a 2-run homer to highlight a three run first inning for Flandreau. The lead didn’t last long, as Canova put up 6 runs in the 3rd to take the lead. Jared Miller, Justin Miller, and Garrett Gassman all had home runs in the win. Jason Miller also had 3 RBI for Canova. Trey Krier gave up 5 runs and struck out 5 over 6 innings while picking up the win.
Sunday the Humboldt Hartford Gamecocks defeated the Flandreau Blue Teal 24 -0. The Humboldt Hartford Wood Ducks defeated the Broncos 4-3. The season ended for both the Blue Teal and the Broncos. District 4B games continue on Tuesday with the Dells Mudcats and Dell PBr meeting up for a 6pm game followed by Salem vs Canova.
