DSU “Walks” to walk off win

Patience paid off for Dakota State baseball on Sunday night, during a five run, ninth inning comeback win over Waldorf in the NSAA tournament.  The Trojans took advantage of seven walks in the bottom of the ninth inning to advance.

DSU trailed 14-10 entering the bottom of the ninth, and opened the inning with three straight walks to load the bases. Ryan McDaniel then singled to drive in a run, followed by a wild pitch to score another. That was followed by two more walks to score a third run. With the bases still loaded Walker Hultgren walked to drive in the game tying run. With their season on the line the Warriors still couldn’t find the strike zone, walking Chris Burke to score the game winning run.

McDaniel finished with three hits, including a home run. Hultgren had three hits and 5 RBI. Grant Svikulis pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the win. He was the 6th pitcher of the night for Dakota State.

Dakota State will take on Viterbo in another elimination game this morning. The winner of that game will play Dickinson State for a spot in the NSAA Championship game.
