The Dakota State Basketball teams both came away with victories on Friday night at Viterbo, the Women via an 81-66 score and the Men in thrilling fashion, 55-54.

The Women finished strong in both the first half and second half, on the way to their fifth straight victory. Tied at 28 with the Lady V-Hawks, DSU ended the half on a 13-2 run to lead 41-30 at half. Viterbo came out hot in the third and knotted the game at 43 all, but Dakota State led 56-51 after three. Using a 17-7 in the fourth quarter, the Lady T’s had the largest lead in the contest at 81-64 with under a minute left before closing out the game. 

Another strong performance up and down the line-up, something that has been a staple in their five game losing streak as well as turning the season around, after starting 2-9. DSU also had another strong defensive performance and out rebounded Viterbo 41-32. Dakota State Women now 11-12 overall on the year, with a 5-3 NSAA mark.

 

The Trojan Men found themselves down by as much as 12 points in the first half of their game, only to come back and trail by two at the break (27-25). DSU tied the game at 34 and then led 39-38 before reeling off 10 straight points with over six minutes left in the second half. Viterbo would use a 13-2 scoring run over the final couple of minutes to take a 54-53 advantage with under a minute left. 

Dakota State had an empty possession and a quick foul put the V-Hawks at the line with a double-bonus situation. Both free throws were missed and the Trojans pushed the ball up the court, found Josh McGreal isolated in the baseline and McGreal elevated for a 14 bucket that gave the visiting Trojans a one point lead with less than five seconds left. A runnning shot from half court was off the mark, giving DSU its second striaght NSAA win. Carson Rentz dropped in 15 points for Dakota State, McGreal with 12 and nine rebounds. 

DSU Basketball will be back in action today, taking on Waldorf on the road. Women play at 3pm and the Men to follow, action on FM103 and amazingmadison.com
