Canova and PBR advance to State Quarterfinals

The Canova Gang and Dell Rapids PBR both moved on to the quarterfinals of the Class B State Amateur Baseball tournament, after posting 2nd round wins on Tuesday night. 

Canova cruised through the first 8 innings of their matchup with Kimball/White Lake. The Gang took a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the 9th inning, but the Nationals scored 5 runs in the 9th. Jonny Lyons hit a grand slam to pull the Nationals within three runs, and the tying run came to the plate with two outs before Carter Lenz struck out to give Canova a 9-6 win. 

Jared and Justin Miller both finished with 2 hits for Canova. Garrett Gassman drove in two runs for the Gang. Every Canova starter had at least one of the Gang’s 16 hits. 

In the late game at Cadwell Park Tuesday, Dell Rapids PBR picked up a 13-3 win over the Milbank Fire Chiefs in 8 innings. PBR Starter Trey Randel allowed 3 unearned runs, and struck out 10 Milbank batters over six innings.

PBR pickup player Heith Williams had 2 hits, including a 3-run homer. Drew Sweeter finished with 3 hits and 3 RBI. And Brayden Pankonen went 4-for-5 with 4 runs and 3 RBI. 

Canova and PBR will now play each other in the quarterfinals, Friday at 5:30pm.

2nd round games conclude today in Mitchell, with Mt. Vernon vs. Winner, and Four Corners vs. Garretson.
