South Dakota high school tennis now a two class system

The South Dakota High School Activities Association 2019-2020 season begins this week, as girls tennis teams from across the state begin competition. For the first time ever there will be more than one class of tennis in South Dakota. Boys and Girls Tennis had been the last SDHSAA sport with only one class, but this season will see a field of 12 teams in AA and 11 teams in Class A.

Rob Graham, head coach of the Madison girls tennis team, said the small schools are excited about the change.

Graham says the Class A field looks to be very competitive.

The top ten schools based on enrollment make up the new AA class, along with Sioux Falls O’Gorman and St. Thomas More who each petitioned to move up. The Class A field includes;  Aberdeen Roncalli, Huron, Lennox, Madison, Milbank, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City Christian, Spearfish, Vermillion, and Yankton.

The Madison Bulldogs kick off the season this week, traveling west river to take part in the Rapid City Invite. The Class A girls state tennis meet will be held in Sioux Falls, October 7th and 8th.
