Shirley J. Barnhouse, 71, of Salem passed away due to natural causes on October 9, 2020 at her home.  Visitation with begin at noon on Monday, October 12 with family present from 5 – 7 pm at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.  A private family funeral service will be held.

Shirley Jean Schuldt was born November 11, 1948 in Mitchell, SD to Clarence and Gertrude (Ehrlich) Schuldt.  She grew up on the family farm in rural Emery, SD with her three siblings Judy, Marvin and Darlene. She met Jerry Dykes while attending high school. They were married on August 15, 1964 and from this union four children were born, Dennis, Kelly, Brad and Brenda.  Jerry passed away in 1994.  Shirley married Roger Barnhouse on October 3, 1997 and they lived in Salem.  Through the years, Shirley drove school bus, waitressed at Pleasant Acres, worked at Cenex and the Shortstop.  She also served on city council for several years.  She enjoyed gardening, canning, putting up her famous pickles and baking with the grandkids.

Shirley is survived by:  her husband, Roger; children, Dennis Dykes, Kelly (Ingrid) Dykes, Brad (Stephanie) Dykes, Brenda (Pete) Peterson, Theresa Muilenberg, Rick Barnhouse, David (Michelle) Barnhouse and Troy (Sarah) Barnhouse; sister, Judy Wright; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Jerry, brother Marvin Schuldt and sister Darlene Horsley.
