LaVern Yost

LaVern Yost, 96, of Mitchell and formerly of Salem passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023 at Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell.  Funeral mass will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 14, 2023 with visitation one hour prior to the service.

LaVern Yost was born July 20, 1927 to John and Katherine (Wingen) Bartscher in Salem, SD.  She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1944.  She then went on to work at the K&K Store as bookkeeper and at Central Gas Co., the Golden Pheasant and then the Spencer and McCook Central school as a cook for 25 years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s parish where she was baptized, received first communion, confirmation and was married.  She was active in Altar Society, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Christian Mothers as well as the American Legion Auxiliary.

LaVern married Lorrin Yost on April 17, 1951 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem.  She loved to be with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and decorating her home with flowers.  She was also an avid Minnesota Twins fan.

LaVern is survived by: her daughters, Cathy (John) Maguire of Sioux Falls, Connie Thuringer of Parkston, Cindy (Stuart) Barns of Mitchell and Carla (Todd) Snyders of Salem; a son, Curtis of Sioux Falls; 9 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by; her husband, Lorrin on May 1, 1979, her parents, John and Katherine, one son, Craig, one granddaughter, Amanda, one great granddaughter, Taylor, one son-in-law, Francis and 8 siblings.
