Kay Schmidt

Kay A. Schmidt, age 74, of Madison, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024 at Madison Regional Health System.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Friday, September 6th at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ted Faszer officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Thursday at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel and will continue on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Kay Arlene Becker was born May 24, 1950 in Madison, SD, the daughter of Harm & Leona (Scholl) Becker. She graduated from Ramona High School in 1968. She started working in medical records at the clinic for Dr. Stensrud. While working there, she met Vernon R. Schmidt and they were married on April 25, 1970 at First Presbyterian Church in Madison. Not long after the wedding, Vern was drafted into the military and deployed to Alaska where they lived for one year. They then returned to Madison where Kay started working for the county as a deputy auditor. She eventually ran for the position of auditor for Lake County and served from 1987 to 2011. She then started working for Dakota State University from 2012 to 2022 as a document imager.

Kay participated in several clubs over the years, some of them were, Madison Garden Club, Alley Cats and Friday Nights bowling leagues, Bunco, Lake County Republicans, Bethel Foundation and East River Credit Union. She also was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as a Church Deacon and Elder.

Kay is survived by her husband, Vernon; daughter, Tracey Schmidt (Todd Olson) and son, Scott (Jo) Schmidt; five grandchildren, Tiffany Heeren, Tyler Heeren, Elizabeth (Ryan) Engle, Connor Schmidt and Paige Schmidt; two great-grandchildren, Ryder & Emery Engle; brother, Larry (Diane) Becker; sister-in-law, Karen Becker; aunts, Lorene Erikson and JoAnn Hoines.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Harm & Leona Becker, father & mother-in-law; Ralph & Sirie Schmidt, her two brothers; Ronald Becker and his wife, LaVonne and Kenny Becker and several aunts & uncles.
