John DeRungs

John DeRungs, age 62, of Ramona, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Madison
Regional Health System.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Friday, November 18 th at St. Williams Catholic
Church, Ramona with Father Bob Vinslauski as the Celebrant. Visitation will be 4-7 PM on
Thursday at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM and a Rosary to
follow. Visitation will continue on Friday one hour prior to mass at the church. Burial will be in

John Vincent DeRungs was born on January 16 th of the year 1960 in Mitchell, SD to Leo and
Velma (Horwedel) DeRungs. John was a graduate of Ramona High School in 1978, despite
spending much of his senior year in Rochester, MN battling cancer. He married the love of his
life, Claudia Deneke, on July 26, 1980, at St. Williams Catholic Church in Ramona.
To say John was proud of his family would be a tremendous understatement. He enjoyed
working side by side with his son, brother, and nephews. He loved his son, who was the twinkle
in his eye. He was a proud grandpa to Lincoln Joseph, and he would have moved the world for
his daughter-in-law, Morgan. He knew how lucky he was to have such a devoted, caring wife,
who stood by his side through thick and thin and would love to dance the night away her.
John enjoyed so many things about his life. If you asked anyone what John’s favorite hobby
was, the answer would be simple. Cows. His life centered around breeding, feeding, showing,
and talking about cows, and Limousin cows more specifically. John was so proud to be
recognized by the South Dakota Limousin Association as the Commercial Producer of the Year
last February at the Black Hills Stock Show. He also loved team roping and raising horses,
dancing, hunting, and smoking meat.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Claudia; son Logan (Morgan) of Ramona; grandson
Lincoln; four siblings, Annette (Jim) Sternhagen of Madison, Hoss (Deanne) DeRungs of
Ramona, Jim (Sheri) DeRungs of Ramona, Monica (Francis) Schlosser of Mascoutah, Illinois;
several nieces and nephews and countless friends that loved him immensely. He was preceded
in death by his parents, and his nephew Patrick, whom he loved and missed dearly.
