Joan Christine Pedersen, was born November 12, 1943 in rural Arlington, SD. She was the third of five children born to Harold and Pearl (Hesby) Pedersen. She was baptized as an infant into the Christian faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington. As a teenager she confirmed her faith and continued to follow Christ throughout her life.

Her elementary education was in country schools. She then attended Arlington High School and graduated in 1961. After graduation, she was employed at South Dakota State College in Brookings.

On August 5, 1962 she married Laurence Groon., a union lasting more than sixty years. They farmed for many years in the Arlington area. Joan was a busy wife, homemaker and mother of three children. She always had a productive vegetable garden, raising broilers and had a large flock of laying hens. Her favorite pastimes were reading, crocheting, quilting and tending her flower beds. A highlight in her life was traveling through her ancestral roots in Norway and Denmark.

Joan was a member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church and joyed working with “the girls” in the quilting group. God also seemed to find a way to send the lonely into Joan’s life. She had a gift comforting them with listening and understanding.

Joan is survived by her husband, Laurence; children, Diane (Eric) Trombley, Steven (Michele) Groon and Linda Groon; grandchildren, Kristina Trombley and Megan Trombley; four brothers; six sister-in-laws and four brother-in-laws.

Joan was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law and other beloved family members.
