Janice A. Phelps, age 88, of Madison, died Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Heritage Senior Living in Madison. Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Thursday, December 26, 2019, with a prayer service at 7, at the Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, at the Colman Cemetery. Per her request, there will be no funeral service.

Janice French was born on June 29, 1931, in Flandreau, to Philo and Lulu (Fulmer) French. She grew up in Colman, graduating from Colman High School. She worked at the Colman newspaper whichher father and mother owned. On April 3, 1954, Janice married Richard “Dick” Phelps in Washington, MN. They farmed in the Rutland area and after moving off of the farm, they resided in Colton. Together, they thoroughly enjoyed spending weekends at their lake cabin.

Following their time in Colman, they returned to Madison and built a new home. Dick was employed by Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Lake County Soil Conservation, where Janney also worked part-time. Janney was a very crafty person, who knit and crocheted beautiful doilies and afghans. She also made many beautiful ceramic pieces.

She is survived by her brothers-in-law, Darrell (Linda) Phelps, and Thomas (Joan) Phelps; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Larry) Chase, Darlene Phelps, and Judy Sona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dick in 2017; her brother Gerald and his wife Myrna; father and mother-in-law, Donald (Hazel) Phelps; brothers-in-law, Ronald (Monica) Phelps, Dr. Harold (Nancy) Phelps, Dale Phelps, Edward Phelps; sisters-in-law, Arlys (Jack) Stanford, Jack (Duane) McNeil, and Mary Peterson.
