James R. Heumiller, 84,  of Montrose passed away on April 24, 2021 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.  Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem.  Visitation with family present will begin at 6 pm on Tuesday with a rosary at 6:45 pm and prayer service at 7 pm.

James Heumiller was born March 15, 1937 to Anton and Lena (Kobberman) Heumiller in Salem, SD.  He attended school in Salem and then took over the responsibilities of the family farm.  Jim was a hard worker.  He worked at Feterl’s Manufacturing, managed the Country Club……   Jim married Judy Herting on May 30, 1959 and with that marriage had five children, 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.  Judy passed away on…..  He married Janice (Lunders) Kappenman on April 9, 2005 and added five children, 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren more.

Jim loved his family, fishing and gardening—especially growing prize tomatoes and cabbage.  Watching squirrels and feeding birds were some of his favorite things to do.  He was always teasing and was full of one-liners.  Jim enjoyed proving how lucky he was!

Jim is survived by: his wife, Janice of Montrose; his children, Donna (Brent) Wulff, Paul (Wanda) Heumiller, Janet (Bob) Jackson, Roger (Kris) Heumiller, Ron (Amy) Heumiller, Renee (Rich) Siegmann, Brad Kappenman, Brian (Kim) Kappenman, Mary (Dennis) Struck and Cheryl (Tim) Donelan; 33 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many other special family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Judy, and several brothers, sisters and other family members.
