Elizabeth “Betty” Freeman, 98, of Canova passed away on Monday, April 26, 2021 at Madison Regional Health in Madison, SD.  Funeral services will begin at 10 am on Friday, April 30 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Canova.  Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, rural Canova followed by a luncheon at the Legion Hall in Canova.  Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Thursday at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

Elizabeth Hofer was born September 29, 1922 to Jacob and Elizabeth Hofer on the family farm north of Freeman, SD.  She lived on the farm and attended country school for 8 years before attending Freeman Academy for high school and two years of college.  She taught school for many years and was a faithful member of the Hutherthal Mennonite Church.

On February 25, 1951 she was united in marriage to Christian J. Freeman of Canova, SD in Freeman.  They lived on a farm near Freeman until 1984 when they moved to Canova.  After moving the joined the St. Paul Lutheran Church where Betty taught Sunday School and was president of the Ladies’ Organization.  After St. Paul closed they joined Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Chris passed away in 1994 after 43 ½ years of marriage and Betty continued living in Canova.  Her son Larry lived with her for a number of years.  Betty entertained at the Good Samaritan in Howard as well as the Corn Palace in Mitchell and church programs.

She is survived by: her children, Jerry (Susie) of Brookings, Larry of Canova, Harvey (Teresa) of Garretson and Carol (Todd) Galbraith of Winner; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sisters, Agnes Paulsen of Laguna Hills, CA and Gladys (Pud) Reynolds of Atlanta, GA.  She was preceded in death by: her husband, parents, siblings-Paul, Sam, Sarah, Esther and Edna and a granddaughter, Christina.
