Elida Mae Hyland was born July 9, 1928, near Nunda, SD to Ervin & Matilda (Gauthun) Hyland. She graduated from Eastern High School in Madison. On November 17, 1948, Elida married Francis DeVaney in Luverne, MN. The newlywed couple made their living on the farm and settled near Rutland. Besides helping her husband on the farm, she began working in the late 1970’s at the Colman bar. In 1979, Elida and her husband bought the Wentworth bar and operated it for 6 years. During their time owning the bar, Francis died in 1980. She decided to retire and then moved into Madison in 1995.

She was very active and proud to be a member of the Madison VFW Auxiliary and the Wentworth American Legion Auxiliary. Elida loved to travel, and she would often accompany her sister, Shirley on several bus trips throughout the US. As her health declined, she needed more help and she moved into Heritage Assisted Living in February 2022.

Elida is survived by her six children, Janet (Alan) Leighton of Rapid City, Jim (June) DeVaney and Mike (Sandy) DeVaney both of Madison, Kitty (Mark) Gustaf of Blackhawk, SD, Scott (Carla) DeVaney and Tony (Jennifer) DeVaney both of Madison; nineteen grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; three great-great grandsons and two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Hyland and Sharon Pederson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; six brothers, Allen (Rose Mary) Hyland, Edward (Evelyn) Hyland, Mervin (Mary) Hyland, Robert (Shirley) Hyland, Stanley (Eunice) Hyland and Jim Hyland; one sister, Shirley (Everett) Van Beek; grandson, Mason Robertson and granddaughter, Cassandra DeVaney.
