Duane Bartmann
Duane Bartmann, 76, of Montrose passed away, Thursday August 22, 2024, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD after a long and courageous battle. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30am on Monday, August 26, 2024, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Montrose, SD. Visitation will begin at 5pm on Sunday August 25, 2024, with a 7pm prayer service at St. Patrick’s.
Duane Henry Bartmann was born March 23, 1948, to Joseph and Marcella (Wingen) Bartmann in Sioux Falls, SD. Duane grew up on a farm near Montrose with his parents and three brothers and four sisters. Duane attended country school and later graduated from Montrose High School in 1966. He attended Springfield College following high school and then moved to Denver, CO to continue his education to in Diesel Mechanic career field. After his graduation from Diesel Automotive School in CO, Duane was drafted into the United States Army. Duane served during the Vietnam Era from February 1969 to February 1971. He attended technical school at Ft. Dix, NJ and was later stationed in Germany where he furthered his education and training in Diesel Mechanics.
After his time in the service, Duane returned to Montrose, SD to farm with his dad, Joseph. Duane farmed and maintained a custom combining service for several years. He and his two brothers Michael and Patrick later formed Bartmann Bros Partnership.
Duane met his wife, Barbara (Krumvieda) in 1982. They were married at St. Patricks Catholic Church on June 20, 1986. As a result of this union, Duane received three bonus children Kyle, Charlotte, and Machelle (Noell). They moved to an acreage outside of Montrose, SD where they continue to live. Duane and Barb were later blessed with two sons Anthony and Joshua which completed the Bartmann family.
Duane continued to farm with his two brothers until his retirement. Duane loved to farm, ride horse, and tinkering in his shop rebuilding tractors and aiding anyone in need. Duane had a thirst for knowledge and was resourceful. He was observed watching you tube videos, national geographic, reading, and experimenting and could build something out of nothing. His family would often say, “If Papa can’t fix it, no one can.”
Duane was a proud member of the American Legion, Ruste-Waul Post 154 in Montrose, SD. He was always willing to volunteer and worked many events. He participated in many Memorial Day programs and was a part of the Honor Guard.
Duane enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews, and his other family and friends. He was always ready for a game of pitch and happy hour.
Duane loved his family fiercely, attending every important event and loved to be surrounded by family and friends even when he wasn’t feeling well. He exuded compassion, generosity, orneriness and inherited the German stubbornness. He will be missed by many and remembered by all.
Duane is survived by his wife, Barbara, his children Kyle (April) Noell of Sioux Falls, SD, Charlotte (Ryan) Walter of Parker, SD, Machelle (significant other, Keith) Kocer of Montrose, SD, Anthony (Holly) Bartmann of Hartford, SD, Joshua (Kayla) Bartmann of Canistota, SD; Grandchildren, Shay, Zachary, Reese, Jaydan, Jessica, Brie, Nathaniel, Seth, Jonah, Moriah, Blake, Macy, Lily & Samuel; Great-Grandchildren, Kaysan, Haven, & Paige and numerous nieces and nephews. Siblings; Vince, Maryanne, Michael, Patrick, Nancy, & Donna and His mother Marcella.
He was preceded in death by his father Joseph and sister Jeanie, his father-in-law, Marvin and mother-in-law Lorraine Krumvieda.
