Donna Jean Schweitzer

Our mom, Donna Jean, aka Cookie, passed away in her home on May 24 at the age of 77.

Memorial Service is Thursday, May 28th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Sun Prairie Baptist Church of Salem.

Born to Donald Louis Mattke and Rogene Edith Mattke in North Platte, Nebraska, Donna was the eldest sibling to two brothers, Richard and James Mattke.    Her parents divorced when she was five years old. In 1955, her father married Violet

“Penny “Schmer. Donna would then become a big sister to Jaqueline and Gregory Mattke. She would not see her maternal mother until after her high school graduation and entry into Hastings College for nursing and graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing.  In Hastings, she met and eventually married our dad, Allan Lee Pounds in 1962. They had three children:  Timothy, Rebecca “Becky” and Nancy.   After her divorce in 1967, Donna began work as a public health nurse in Omaha, NE, a career she would continue for the next 40 years. As a visiting nurse, Donna provided home health care to hundreds of patients in Omaha’s toughest and least developed neighborhoods. Her children would often visit the orthopedics ward of Omaha West Public Hospital, where she cared for victims of severe spinal injuries.

In 1974, Donna decided to complete her nursing studies and set out to acquire her RN degree.  After 18 months of rigorous classes and floor working, and a lengthy separation from her children, Donna received her BSN Pin.  Donna united the family and moved to Ralston, Nebraska.  She worked as nursing supervisor and continued to provide home health care.

In 1978, Donna met Willard Schweitzer, a real estate broker from Iowa City, Iowa, and father of two children, Ken and Karen Schweitzer. Donna and Willard married in 1979 and lived in Iowa City IA. Donna then began working for the Veteran’s Hospital. In 1985 they moved to Glendale, Arizona, where Donna became a Home Health Visiting nurse for the special need’s pediatric patients until 2010.  They decided to move Salem, to be closer to family.
