Curtis J. Hueners, age 87, of Howard, died Saturday, January 30, 2021, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church in Howard. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:30 – 6:00 PM, Monday, at the Willoughby Funeral Home. Masks will be required at all services.

 

Curtis John Hueners was born August 10, 1933 at Madison to John D. and Fredrica J (Balster) Hueners. He attended Clearwater Country School and graduated from Winfred High School in 1951. He attended Southern Teachers College at Springfield, SD before being drafted in the United States Army in 1955.  

 

Curtis was united in marriage to Thelma Hyink on May 21, 1955 in Winfred. After their marriage, Curtis was sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Maryland. Curtis was then sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington. While there, in 1956, Curtis received his orders to go to Germany. He was discharged in February 1957.

Curtis and Thelma purchased a farm northeast of Howard and continued to farm there and later near Winfred until moving to Howard in October 1992.

Curtis was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Howard.  He served on numerous boards and committees within the church.  He also taught Sunday School and Teen Bible Class.  He served on the Clearwater Township and FmHA advisory Board, and on the FSA County Committee for nine years. He was also a member of the Howard American Legion.

Curtis and Thelma enjoyed singing together for funerals and special occasions. Many happy times were spent with family and friends.

Curtis is survived by his wife Thelma, a daughter Linda (Brian) Feit and son Gary (Lesa) Hueners; grandchildren, Matthew (Sarah) Feit, Laura (Adam) Bosch, Jason (Holly) Feit, Brock (Jennifer) Wallen, Shawn (Tricia Kretchmer) Wallen, Seth (Ashley Walterman) Wallen; great grandchildren Beckham Feit, Lola Bosch, Milo Bosch, Aubree Blue, Mya Wallen, Haley Wallen and Coen Wallen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Jacquelyn in infancy, one brother Royce and his grandparents.
