Carol A. Verhey

Carol A. Verhey (Schirmacher), 84, passed away November 27, 2024, in Madison, SD surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 3, from 5-7 PM at Ellsworth Funeral Home. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Madison.

Carol was born January 6, 1940, in Madison, SD, the daughter of William and Mae (Wolkenhauer) Schirmacher in the family home.

A life-long resident of Madison, where she attended school and graduated from Madison High School in 1958. Her first job was secretary for a local lawyer and then became a homemaker and mother of three children. She worked alongside her husband, Bert and her family, on the family livestock farm.

When her youngest started school, she worked as a school secretary for every elementary school in the district. She was a member of the School Administrators of South Dakota. She retired after serving thirty-nine years.

She loved to work in her garden. Her favorite flower was roses, and she loved her green beans. She enjoyed spending time with friends playing cards and dominoes.

Carol was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she served on several committees of the church.

She treasured time with family, hosting many Christmases with large meals, Christmas Eve present opening, and going as a family to the Christmas Eve service. Carol leaves behind a legacy of service to her family, to her church, and living out her faith to friends and neighbors.

Carol will be missed by her three children, a daughter Terri of Lawrence, KS, Kevin (Valerie) of Madison, Jeffrey (Janelle) of Minot, ND, and eight grandchildren. Joshua (Allison), Sarah, Danielle, Melissa (Alex), Jessica, Dallas (Nichole), Beth (Alex), and Alison, two great- grandchildren, Grayson and Remington. She is survived by her sisters Victoria Madison, Sharon (David) Daniels, Mary (Earl) Cole, and her brother John (Robin) Raschdorf.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents William and Mae (Wolkenhauer) Schirmacher, sisters, Jean, Orla, Myrna, and brother Bill, and her beloved husband Bert.
