Madison High School Gives Update on New Cell Phone Policy
Students in Madison will be heading back to school one week from today. The Madison Central School Board held their final regular meeting before the start of the school year on Monday, and reviewed changes to the school handbooks. Madison High School Principal Adam Shaw highlighted some of the changes, which include a new policy for cell phones at MHS.Â
Principal Shaw said it wouldn’t be surprising to see legislation out of Pierre addressing cell phones used in schools during the next legislative session. When it comes to smart watches, Shaw said the school will leave the decision up to each teacher as to whether or not students will need to put those into the caddies as well.Â
Middle School Principal Cotton Koch said that their policy of no phone use during the school day remains unchanged. He said one of the biggest reasons students are caught using cell phones is because parents are texting children in the middle of class.Â
Elementary principal Janel Guse said research is showing that children are moving from a play based generation, to phone based generation.Â
At Madison Elementary, phones are kept in students’ lockers during the day.
