Dangerous heat and storms possible today
Dangerous weather is possible throughout today and tonight in southeastern South Dakota. Hot and humid conditions continue today, with heat index values ranging from around 88 in Brookings, to 96 in Madison, and as high as 112 degrees in Storm Lake Iowa. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says these are dangerous conditions, even for healthy populations. They add heat and humidity and can sneak up on you, and encourage everyone to take precautions and stay safe.
A potentially significant severe weather episode may also develop this afternoon, as early as 2pm, and continue into the early overnight hours of Tuesday. Strong thunderstorms are possible, including the chance of hail greater than 2″, with 75+ mph winds, and even a few tornadoes. Rain totals between 1 and 2 inches are possible as well.
