Brookings hosting Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event on Saturday

Residents of Brookings, Brookings County and several nearby counties will have the opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste at a free event on Saturday.

The City of Brookings Regional Landfill will host the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Event from 8 a.m. to 12 noon in the Dacotah Bank Center parking lot. The event is open to residents in Brookings, Deuel, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Lake and Moody counties, all of which are in the landfill’s service area.

This will mark the fourth consecutive year for the event, said Katie Stiegelmeier, business operations and logistics manager for the City’s Solid Waste Division.

“Residents showed up in record numbers last year, and we collected a little more than 17 tons, or 34,000 pounds, of household hazardous waste,” she said. “Our residents understand the importance of keeping chemicals out of our landfill, and they appreciate having a way to conveniently and responsibly dispose of their household hazardous waste.”

Improper disposal of toxic, flammable or otherwise hazardous materials can be a threat to people, animals, drinking water, and the environment.

While the event is free, Stiegelmeier said people are encouraged to bring non-perishable items for the Brookings County Food Pantry. “The event provides a great opportunity for people to support the food pantry,” she said. “Last year, people donated nearly 800 non-perishable items and many donated cash. We appreciate their generosity.”
