Matthew Gerald Westbrock was born October 18, 1970, in Walla Walla, WA. When he was five years
old, the family moved to Tabor, SD. He graduated from Bon Homme High School in 1989. While there,
he excelled in sports, receiving All-State honors in football and basketball. Matt attended Mount Marty
College on a basketball scholarship earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After graduation, he
worked as a private investigator before moving on to cattle ranching near Pilger, NE, where he lived with
his wife, Tami, and horse Milkshake. He loved country life, going to rodeos and riding horses, and doing
his work with a lot of help from his horse, Gunner.
Matt switched careers and installed kitchen cabinets for many years. A lot of people in southeast South
Dakota and northeast Nebraska have his handy work in their homes.
Matt was true to his Cornhuskers, a fan even in the lean years. Matt loved to work in the shop, creating
anything that mom pulled off of Pinterest to make for Christmas presents or step stools for his younger
relatives. Matt wasn’t one to sit still, whether it was sports or yardwork, he just kept moving. He had a
quick wit, never forgot a face, and always left an impression…
He is survived by his son, Tagert; mother, Phyllis Westbrock of Madison, SD; sister, Tanya Westbrock of
Rapid City, SD; brother, Marc (Sam) Westbrock of Peabody, KS; sister, Laura Westbrock (Jimmy
Kneedler) of Monument, CO; niece, Hannah Westbrock (fiancée, Cameron Provencher) of Portland, OR;
nephew, Logan Westbrock and his son, Lucian, of Rapid City, SD; nephew, David Westbrock of Peabody,
KS; and niece, Emily (Tristin) Hamm and their son, Warren of Hesston, KS.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Westbrock.
In lieu of flowers, the family is creating an endowment fund to support those less fortunate with medical
needs. Contributions should be sent to the Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel in care of Phyllis Westbrock,
or to any family members.
