The Madison girls basketball team turned up the defensive pressure once again on Saturday, and overcame a poor shooting night, to beat the Garretson Blue Dragons 56-55 at the Mustang Seeds Shootout.

The Bulldogs built up a 10 point lead in the 1st quarter that didn’t last long. Garretson out scored Madison 23-7 in the 2nd quarter, to take an 11 point lead into halftime. The Bulldogs came back to tie the game at the end of the 3rd quarter. That set up an exciting finish to the final game of the shootout.

With Garretson leading by three and under a minute to go, Grace Nelson got fouled and made one of two free throws to cut the lead down to two points. Garretson picked up the rebound, but Briana Steuerwald stole the ball from Lizzie Olson and made a layup while getting fouled. She completed the three point play at the line, and gave Madison a one point lead with 24 seconds left. Garretson then held the ball for a final shot, but Peyton Hove’s attempt was off the mark, and the Bulldogs held on for their 4th win of the season.

Steuerwald finished with 11 points. Kendra Leighton had 13 points and 7 of Madison’s 20 steals. Grace Nelson added 11 points and 8 rebounds. Madison will travel to Vermillion on Tuesday.
