Madison Black Falls, Madison Maroon Advances in Region Tournaments

The Madison Black 16U Team saw their season come to a close with a pair of losses at the Region Two Tournament on Thursday. After picking up an opening round victory over Dell Rapids on Wednesday, the Black team could not keep up with host Volga – falling 19-2 in three innings. Kayden Gehrels drove in both runs for Madison in the loss.

Then looking to rebound in an elimination game with Milbank, Madison Black came up just short, 3-2. Milbank scored runs in the first three innings, Madison answered with a run in the third and in the sixth. Black was able to put the tying run on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but an infield popup ended the game. Mason Kennington and Addison Gehrels each drove in a run, Jovi Wolf pitched 4 plus innings in relief for Madison.

Meanwhile, Madison Maroon picked up a pair of victories at the Region One Tournament in Colton. In an elimination game, Maroon found themselves down to Lennox 8-2 after three innings. Madison would answer with four runs in the top of the fourth and eventually tied the game in the top of the seventh on a Logan Albee RBI single. After holding Lennox in the bottom of the seventh, Madison Maroon scored two runs in the eighth and went on to win 12-10.

With the win, the Maroon team moved into the championship game and punched their ticket to the Class A State Tournament, as the top two teams in each region advance. Madison scored four runs in the top of the first inning versus Tri-Valley and never looked back, winning 12-7. Nathan Ricke drove in four runs, Trey Smith drove in three himself and scored four times. The win set up a second championship game, as Tri-Valley had not lost in the double elimination tournament. The two sides will play for seeding purposes and the title this evening in Colton.
