Both the Madison boys and girls basketball teams picked up wins on Saturday, at the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell. Played at the Corn Palace, the Classic was the first of its kind in South Dakota, pitting Native American teams against non-native schools.

The Madison girls played the 2nd game of the Classic, opening up a quick lead and never trailed on their way to a 71-50 win over Pine Ridge. Madison went up by 7 points after the 1st quarter, and lead by double digits through the final quarter.  Kendra Leighton led the offensive attack with 24 points. Zoey Gerry added 16 off the bench, while Lexie Roemen had 8.

The Bulldog boys were also winners on Saturday, with a 72-62 victory over Red Cloud. While Madison led almost the entire game, they were never able to pull away from the Crusaders. The Bulldogs built up a 10 point or more lead 4 times, only to have Red Cloud close it back to a one possession game. In the end, Madison’s defense proved to be too much, as key 4th quarter takeaways kept the Bulldogs in front.

Cody Brown finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Tappe added 18 points with 8 boards, and Aspen Dahl had 8 points off the bench.

The Madison girls are back at home on Tuesday hosting Arlington, while the boys will host Tea Area on Friday.Â
