For the next week, the sale and discharge of fireworks is legal in the state. State Fire Marshal Paul Merriman warns though that safety must be a priority when it comes to using fireworks during this July 4th holiday time. Fireworks sales for South Dakota residents start Saturday, June 27th and last through Sunday, July 5th. The final day to legally discharge fireworks is also July 5th.
Merriman says that every year throughout the nation, there are stories of people getting hurt or being killed because of fireworks. He said that recent hot and dry conditions also pose a potential risk for those using fireworks.
