It is likely that many retailers in the state don’t know that the age limit for buying tobacco products has already gone up from 18 to 21.

Nathan Sanderson, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association, says that usually with such law changes, there is a long waiting period, but this time the FDA has ruled that the legislation signed by President Trump just before Christmas became effective immediately.

Sanderson says there will be some confusion among retailers.

Sanderson expects that most retailers in the state don’t yet realize that the new age limit is already law.  He says retailers will have to make practical changes, including new signs, and updated training for employees.
