The South Dakota Board of Regents will again ask the 2020 legislature to authorize and help fund a needs-based scholarship called “Dakota’s Promise.” The proposal failed in this year’s session.

Regents Executive Director Paul Beran, in front of the Appropriations Committee this week, says the needs based scholarship would help those students that fall just short of qualifying for the “Opportunity Scholarship.”

Beran says many of those students need some extra help paying for higher education.

Beran says a needs-based scholarship would help many students fill in some critical gaps.

The Regents are asking for about one million dollars from the state with the rest to be raised by the universities.
