Program honoring vets held Thursday in Madison

Madison area veterans along with Madison Middle and High School students and staff honored veterans during a special program held Thursday in the high school gym.

Thursday’s featured speaker, Karsyn Dorris, is a 2019 graduate of Madison High School.  Dorris is a student at Augustana University and a cadet in the South Dakota State University ROTC program.  She enlisted in the Army National Guard in February of 2020.  Dorris talked about how volunteer work when she was younger started her interest in service.

Dorris said that she realized that she was capable of doing more for her community.

Dorris said that there are more than 72-thousand veterans living in South Dakota, and that it is important to honor them and those who are currently serving.

Thursday’s Veterans Day program also included Voice of Democracy essays by Madison High School students Tim Kessler and Abbey Allen, and a Patriots Pen essay by Middle School student Devrah Meyer, along with musical selections by Madison High School Choir and Band members.Â
