New driver license requirements for teenage drivers take effect July 1st

A new state law takes effect today that changes some requirements for South Dakota teenage driver licenses and permits.

Jane Schrank, head of the state’s Driver License Program, said drivers between the ages of 14 and 18, getting their first permit, will need more extensive training.

Schrank said there are other new restrictions being added.

Schrank said drivers education can be used for some of the training requirements.

The changes had been approved by the 2020 state legislature, but due to the pandemic, those new rules were delayed until July first of this year.
