Madison City Commissioners this week approved the first reading of the city’s budget ordinance for 2021.

During the meeting, City Finance Officer Jennifer Eimers went through the information included in the ordinance with commissioners.  Eimers said the total overall budget for the city for 2021 is close to 38-point-four-million dollars.  She said this is more than five-and-a-half-million dollars more than the city’s 2020 budget, mainly because of the city’s Rural Development projects.

The largest fund within the city’s budget is the Electric Fund, with total appropriations and accumulations for 2021 of just more than eleven-point-four-million dollars.  The next largest is the city’s Water Fund, with just more than six-point-four-million dollars in appropriations and accumulations for next year, and then the city’s sewer fund at close to three-million dollars.  Eimers said that the city’s 2021 budget does not include rate increases for these three utilities at this time.  She said Monday that she feels confident about the city’s budget.

Second reading on the city’s 2021 budget ordinance will be held during the commission’s meeting on September 28th.
