Madison residents, along with Madison Middle and High School students, honored veterans during a special program held Monday in the high school gym.

John Martin, Commander of the Madison VFW Post, addressed the group on what he said is one of his favorite things to talk about – the American veteran.

Martin said that Veterans Day is about paying tribute to America’s most selfless citizens – those who have served for our country and our freedoms.

Martin talked about the fundraising efforts that are underway to help Madison build its own Veterans Park, something he said he hopes can become a reality.

Martin encouraged those attending Monday’s program to focus their thoughts also on those who are away from family and friends serving in the military, and on the hopes of them all returning home safely and remembering the freedoms that all veterans have secured for us.

Also as part of Monday’s program, the Madison High School Band and Choir members performed special selections, along with students from the Madison Christian School.  Three students also presented essays written for the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contests.
