Legislators react to start of session this week

The South Dakota legislative session is now underway.  The session got started Tuesday with Governor Kristi Noem’s State of the State address, where she highlighted her policy and spending priorities.

State Senate Minority Leader Troy Heinert said the state’s finances are in good shape.

Heinert said he was disappointed the Governor didn’t talk about Covid-19, but he said that he and the democratic lawmakers will support solid housing plans.

House Majority Leader Kent Peterson of Salem said the state’s economy is solid.  He said the state’s budget is the priority.

Peterson said there will be intense debate over the available dollars.

Bill introduction continues in the legislature and the first committee hearings start this week.
