Lake Herman residents and State Park dealing with flood water

While Lake County was spared the worst of the flooding that started with heavy rain a week ago today, some areas are still dealing with high water. Lake Herman remains up and over its banks, although the lake level hit its peak on Monday. Some homes around Territorial Road have sand bags around them to protect them from water that is pooled in low lying areas.

Water is over the road in a number of places inside Lake Herman State Park. The road just past the park entrance is partially underwater. Water also has covered a section of the park road near the swimming beach, where Lake Herman and Herman pond have both overflowed. The park loop is closed just past the access to the Upper Campground. The flooding has shut down a number of campsites. Park staff are pumping out the water, but a timeline for when those affected campsites will open is uncertain. The dock at the boat launch was removed this weekend, and that launch is likely to remain closed for some time.

Lake Herman has also backed up into the creek at the Madison Country Club. As of Wednesday, there are now 14 holes open for play with carts at the golf course. While staff there does not know when all holes will be open, they have postponed this Saturday’s Madison Fire Department/ Fraternal Order of Police Tournament Fundraiser to Friday, August 9th.
