Howard man sentenced on grand theft charge

A 49-year-old Howard man was sentenced this week on a grand theft charge.

Richard Umstead, Junior was sentenced in Lake County Circuit Court to serve two years in the state penitentiary on the charge.  Circuit Judge Pat Pardy suspended the penitentiary sentence based on several conditions, including that Umstead serve 30 days in the state penitentiary and be on supervised probation for two years.  Judge Pardy also ordered Umstead to pay fine and costs of more than 600-dollars, make restitution of close to 23-hundred dollars, and re-pay his court-appointed attorney’s fees, among several other conditions.  The judge delayed the start of Umstead’s penitentiary sentence until June 1st.
