Governor urges safety during National Grain Bin Safety Week

A rural Elkton man died Monday when he became buried in corn inside a grain bin on the family farm. The victim is identified as 27 year-old Christopher Bauman.

His death comes on the very same week that has been proclaimed National Grain Bin Safety Week by Agriculture Department Secretary Sonny Perdue.

Governor Kristi Noem lost her own father in a grain bin accident years ago. She says Bauman’s death is another sobering reminder of the dangers of farm work.

Bauman had been augering corn from the bin. Authorities are investigating why he went inside it.

The governor encourages producers to evaluate safety procedures and equipment on their farms and ranches and to make adjustments when needed.
