The Madison City Commission has approved an ordinance making it legal to operate golf carts on Madison’s city streets.

The ordinance requires the person interested in operating a golf cart on a city street to first obtain a permit from the City’s Finance Office.  Madison Police Chief Justin Meyer told city commissioners during their meeting Monday that permits will only be needed for those carts that aren’t licensed otherwise.

There will be a fee for a permit, which will be established by commissioners approving a resolution.

The ordinance which commissioners passed second reading of Monday outlines the definition of a golf cart, the permitting that is required, and operation requirements.  City Finance Officer Jennifer Eimers said that the ordinance should be effective as of July 1st. Â
