Area communities awarded economic development grants

The South Dakota Transportation Commission awarded a total of three-and-a-half-million dollars in economic development grants last week for infrastructure improvements for some smaller communities and agri-business development.

One of the communities in our area receiving a Community Access grant is the City of Salem, which will receive 600-thousand dollars for two streets that serve a business area.  Also, the Cities of Volga and Dell Rapids will each receive 450-thousand dollar grants for streets serving business areas.  The City of DeSmet is also slated to receive a 600-thousand dollar grant for four streets that serve the downtown business area there.  Other communities receiving Community Access grants are Kimball and Parkston.  One Agri-Business grant was awarded to a township in Minnehaha County for a road that serves a dairy operation.

The grants pay for 80-percent of the construction costs of the projects, up to a maximum of 600-thousand dollars.
