Trojans Women’s Basketball Scores 100 Points for First Time This Season

The Dakota State women’s basketball team cruised past Indiana Northwest over the weekend with a winning score of 100-67 during the Viterbo Classic. 

The Trojans won their third straight game and gave the RedHawks their first setback of the season after they won four games in a row to start the season. 

The Trojans and RedHawks had a close first 2 minutes with four lead changes and two ties. 

After holding a close 13-11 lead, the Trojans gained 15 points and contained the RedHawks only allowing them to gain two points. The second quarter began with a 13-2 scoring run from DSU, and they were able to take a 61-32 lead into halftime. 

In the third period, DSU held Indiana Northwest scoreless for about five minutes and had a 19-0 outburst. Brooke Gunderson scored DSU’s 100th point of the game for the first time this season with a free-throw with 2:17 left on the clock. 

Five different Trojans hit double digits in their scoring with Savannah Walsdorf leading the way with 19 points and also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Lilli Mackley and Angela Slattery both had 14 points, while Olivia Ritter had 13 and Sidney Fick dropped in 12 points. Morgan Huber also recorded a game-high five steals for the Trojans.

Michaela Schmidt led the RedHawks with fourteen points and seven rebounds. 

DSU now has an even record of 3-3, while Indiana Northwest fell to a 4-1 record. The Trojans will play their season home opener today when they host Bacone at 6pm in the DSU Fieldhouse.
