Trojans Softball Remains Winless After Weekend Games

The Dakota State Softball team is still searching for their first win of the season after being able to get it this past weekend, falling 11-5 to Peru State and 7-3 against Friends University. 

In the first game of the weekend for the Trojans, the Bobcats stormed out to a large lead that the Trojans could not comeback from. 

After scoring two runs in the first inning, Peru State came back in the second inning and poured in five runs to extend their lead to 7-0. DSU brought in their first run in the bottom of the fourth, but by then they had already given up 11 runs, trailing 11-1.

The Trojans added four more runs in the inning, but the fourth inning was the only time that they scored with neither team adding any more runs to the score, allowing the Bobcats to win 11-5.

Dakota State outhit Peru State 13-10 in the game. The Trojans committed six defensive errors compared to the Bobcats one defensive miscue. 

Mason Usselman finished the game by going 3-of-3 at the plate and recorded a walk for DSU.  Rebecca Hazlett added a home run and drove in two runs. Jacquelyn Folkers had a double and tallied two RBIs.

Carrington Entringer collected a triple, single, and an RBI for DSU. Michelle Evdos had two hits.  Grace Ortmeier had a single and an RBI.  

Andrea Page led the Bobcats with a hit and earned five RBIs.  

Usselman (L, 0-3) took the loss in the pitching circle for DSU after working for one inning.  Ortmeier tossed six innings in relief, giving up three runs on six hits. She registered three strikeouts.

Cheyenne Leach pitched a complete game victory for Peru State.  She allowed five runs on 13 hits and recorded six strikeouts.

The second game of the weekend for DSU, the Trojans were unable to overcome a late game surge from the Falcons.

Friends got on the board first with a run in the opening inning. DSU added their first run of the game in the third, and grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth, thanks to a defensive miscue for the Falcons that allowed Carrington Entringer to score. 

The Falcons answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to regain the lead at 4-2. In the sixth, Friends added three more runs to lead 7-2, putting the game out of reach for the Trojans as they could only add one more run in the top of the seventh. 

The six unanswered runs for the Falcons allowed them to grab the 7-3 victory over the Trojans. 

The Falcons outhit the Trojans 10-6 in the game. A combined 10 defensive errors were recorded in the game, with six errors coming from DSU and four errors from FU.

Entringer paced Dakota State by going 2-of-2 at the plate with two singles and walked once.  She scored three times. Evdos added two singles. Hazlett had a single and an RBI.  Philop had a hit.

Laila Spracklen led Friends with a double, single, and an RBI. Fallyn Marshall collected two hits and two runs scored. Priscilla Mora had two singles and drove in two runs. Carolyn Dallimore had a single and tallied three RBIs.

Maycee Bricker (L, 0-4) tossed a complete game, despite the setback for Dakota State. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits. 

Isabelle Schwien earned the victory after pitching a complete game for Friends.  She allowed three runs (two unearned) on six hits.  She registered seven strikeouts.

Following the two losses this weekend, DSU remains without a win as they fell to 0-12.

 Dakota State takes a week off before returning to action, as they play Tabor in Hillsboro, Kansas on March 16th, and then travel to Columbia, Missouri on March 17th to face Stephens.
