Trojans Open Both Games With Five Runs, Sweep Doubleheader Against Saints

The Dakota State softball team outscored Presentation 24-7 in yesterday’s doubleheader as they won both games in five-innings to give PC their first NSAA losses. 

It didn’t take long for the Trojans to strike, as they registered five runs in the first inning of the first game. This was thanks in part to Michelle Evdos, who hit a 3-Run Homer in the inning. 

Up 5-0, the Trojans continued to stay on the gas with four more runs in the second inning, which forced a PC pitching change during the inning. 

DSU reached double-digit runs in the bottom of the third inning with two more runs to take a 11-0 lead. 

The Saints scored their only runs of the game in the fourth inning, getting three runs in the inning. Mackenzie Sims then hit a solo homer for the Trojans to extend their lead to 12-3, which would be the final.

The Trojans outhit the Saints 12-2 in the game. DSU registered seven extra-base hits, with two home runs, two triples, and three doubles. Both teams committed two defensive errors.

Evdos had a home run, single, and collected five RBIs for DSU. Carrington Entringer added a double, two singles, and scored twice. She also had two stolen bases. Sims had a home run, triple, and two RBIs. 

Maycee Bricker tallied two doubles and a run scored for Dakota State. Rosie Philop added a single and two RBIs. Alexus Foster had a triple, RBI, and two walks. Hannah McFaland recorded a single and an RBI. 

Foster and McFarland each recorded a stolen base for the Trojans.

Camile Vestal led the Saints with a single and an RBI.  

Bricker (W, 4-6) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State. She scattered two singles and allowed three runs (two unearned).

Sara Shevenell (L, 5-4) took the loss in the pitching circle for Presentation. She worked for three innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits.  Yulissa Pena pitched one-plus inning in relief, giving up four runs (two unearned) on four hits.

The Trojans opened up the second game of the doubleheader very similar to how they opened up the first game, scoring five runs once again in the opening inning.

Alexus Foster started the scoring with a solo homerun, and from then on it continued to be all Trojans, leading 5-0 after one.

DSU didn’t score in the second inning, and PC was able to trim the Trojans lead in the third with three runs, to bring the score now to 5-3. The Trojans answered with seven runs in the bottom of the third. 

Rosie Philop hit her first career home run in the inning on a 2-Run blast. Carrington Entringer was also responsible for two runs scored in the inning with a 2-RBI Double in the inning.

With the Trojans up 12-3, the Saints could only add one more run the rest of the way as the Trojans earned the sweep after a 12-4 win in five-innings

DSU registered 10 hits in the game compared to PC nine hits. 

Philop went 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single, and drove in three runs for Dakota State.  Foster added a home run, single, and two RBIs. Sims collected two singles and an RBI. Rebbeca Hazlett had a home run and two RBIs. Entringer registered a double and two RBIs. 

Victoria Vau and Shevenall each had a double, single, and an RBI for Presentation.  

Grace Ortmeier (W, 3-6) earned a complete game victory in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She allowed four runs on nine hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Lauren Paredes (L, 3-6) recorded the defeat after pitching three innings.  She allowed 12 runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.  Shevenell tossed one shutout inning in relief.

Dakota State won for the sixth time in the last seven games, improving their overall record to 8-16 and 7-3 record in the league. Presentation fell to 8-12 overall record and 4-2 NSAA conference record.

Both teams wrap up their four-game NSAA series this afternoon with another doubleheader, with the first game set for 12pm.
