Trojans Keep on Dancing, Advance to NAIA Round of 16

In Round Two of the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament, the Dakota State Trojans ended Eastern Oregon’s 20 game win streak to advance to the Round of 16 with a final score of 86-69.

Early in the game with the Trojans trailing 5-4, Savannah Walsdorf began to carry DSU as she went on to score 13 unanswered points. She finished the quarter with 19 points as DSU led 27-13 after one.

Both the Trojans and the Mounties scored 17 points in the second, but the Trojans still led by double-digits, carrying a 44-30 lead into halftime. DSU led by as much as 18 points in the second quarter.

Eastern Oregon attempted to come back in the third, getting the game back within three as they outscored the Trojans 21-12 in the quarter, trailing DSU only 56-51.

However, the Trojans poured on 30 points in the fourth to close out the game with a final score of 86-69.

Elsie Aslesen also scored twenty-plus, registering 21 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.

Caitlin Dyer was perfect from three-point range, shooting 3-3 deep as she finished with 13 points. 

Sidney Fick and Courtney Menning each added ten points for the Trojans, with Fick going 2-3 from deep and also getting seven rebounds and three steals. Meaning had three rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Bayley Brennan and Brie Holecek tied for a team-leading 12 points for Eastern Oregon. Holecek also added seven rebounds and two steals.

The Trojans were efficient shooting from the floor, shooting 31-63 and 10-22 from deep. Meanwhile the Mounties were 27-70 from the field and made just six of their 24 three-point attempts. 

DSU was outrebounded by EOU 40-37. 

With the win, the Trojans not only ended the Mounties 20 game winning streak, as they finished the season 30-3 overall record, but also tied the school record at 27 wins in a season (27-6 Overall Record). 

They advanced to the NAIA Round of 16 in Sioux City, Iowa and will play on Tuesday, March 14th against Carroll at 3pm. Monday’s game for the Trojans can be heard on FM 103.1 or online at AmazingMadison.com.
