Tordsen Wins Multiple Throwing Titles in Twilight Meet

Dakota State’s throwing team was dominant during the Mount Marty Twilight Meet yesterday, highlighted by Conner Tordsen winning three different throwing titles.  

The outdoor track & field meet featured numerous South Dakota collegiate schools along with schools from the Great Plains Athletic Conference and North Star Athletic Association.

Tordsen captured his fourth straight meet’s hammer throw title by a record-breaking fashion. He tossed a new DSU men’s hammer throw school record of 202 feet, 1.75 inches to win the title.  He broke the previous record of 201 feet, 10 inches earlier this season and his new mark also hit the NAIA ‘A’ automatic mark.

Jacob Joachim added a runner-up honor in the hammer throw, tossing 176 feet for the Trojans.  Houston Lunde hit a career-best 143 feet, 7 inches to finish 10th, followed by Zachary Haugen with a 13th place finish with a toss of 142 feet, 1.25 inches. 

Other DSU hammer throwers results included Jackson Zastera – 141 feet, 7.25 inches, Ryan Chapman – 124 feet, 3 inches – personal record, Dylan Johansen – 122 feet, 7.75 inches – personal record, Jack Hemmen – 107 feet, 8.5 inches – personal record, Jakob Kaiser – 105 feet, 10.25 inches, and Trenton Moran –105 feet, 5 inches.

Dakota State had four discus throwers placed in the top 10, paced by Tordsen with the winning toss of 177 feet, 4.75 inches. Joachim followed up with a career best 148 feet, 3.25 inches to finish sixth, while Haugen was ninth with 143 feet, 7.75 inches. Ethan Damerum had a personal record 142 feet, 11 inches to place tenth.

Other Trojan discus throwers results included Zastera – 131 feet, 6 inches – personal record, Chapman – 130 feet, 2.75 inches – personal record, Hemmen – 124 feet, 3.75 inches – personal record, Lunde – 119 feet, 6.75 inches, Johansen – 115 feet, 10.25 inches, Ethan Teunissen – 112 feet, 9.25 inches, and Moran – 110 feet, 7.25 inches.

Tordsen posted a personal best 51 feet, 9 inches to win the shot put, improving his NAIA ‘B’ provisional qualifying mark (0.08 meters shy of hitting the NAIA ‘A’ automatic mark). His shot-put toss is the fourth best in the school record book. 

Damerum also produced a personal record, a shot-put toss of 47 feet, 7 inches to finish fourth in the event.  Johansen hit a personal best 44 feet, 10.25 inches to finish eighth in the shot put for DSU. Moran added a personal record of 41 feet, 9.25 inches. 

Other DSU shot put throwers results included Lunde – 39 feet, 1.75 inches, Chapman – 38 feet, 10.25 inches, Zastera – 36 feet, 9.5 inches, Haugen – 35 feet, 6.5 inches, Hemmen – 35 feet, 3.75 inches, Shaffer –31 feet, 8.5 inches, and Gortmaker –29 feet, 5.25 inches – personal best.

Ben Hoverson made his debut in the javelin throw, producing a mark of152 feet, 5.5 inches to finish sixth for the Trojans. Xander Sheehan registered a personal best of 136 feet, 3 inches to finish 16th. Kasier recorded a personal best 131 feet, followed by Damerum with 127 feet, 8.75 inches.

Nathan Ingalls leaped 41 feet, 7.25 inches to finish fourth in the triple jump for Dakota State.  Hoverson added 39 feet, .25 inches to place ninth.

Ingalls recorded 18 feet, 10 inches in the long jump. Chase Marshall leaped 18 feet, 3 inches, followed by Gortmaker with a leap of 17 feet, 11.75 inches, and Caleb Roberts with 16 feet, 8 inches.

Kaleb Scott cleared the height of 6 feet, 2.75 inches to place fourth in the high jump for DSU.  Bryant Paulsen added 5 feet, 7 inches.

Treshawn Roberts highlighted the running events as he gained the runner-up honor with a personal record time of 14.90 seconds (seventh best time in the DSU men’s outdoor track & field school record book). He also recorded a time of 1 minute, 1.11 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles for the Trojans.

Colter Elkin registered a time of 9 minutes, 55.12 seconds to place third in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Taylor Myers set a personal record time of 4 minutes, 11.50 seconds to finish sixth in the 1500-meter run for Dakota State. Dylan Hilger also produced a career best time of 4:12.74 to place eighth in the race. Martin Bailey followed up with a career best time of 4:21.87, followed by Gortmaker in 4:42.33 and Jacob Dundas in 5:05.47.

Bailey was fourth in the 5000-meter run for DSU with a time of 16 minutes, 7.57 seconds.  Dalton Brouwer recorded a personal record time of 16 minutes, 46.48 seconds to place seventh.

Blake Schmiedt clocked a personal record time of 2:03.01 to finish 12th in the 800-meter run for the Trojans. Yohannes Kassa followed up with a personal best time of 2:04.23 in the race, while Ian Beyer set a personal record time in 2:04.55. Reese Henrie had a personal record time of 2:08.88 and Lucas Harr finished with a time of 2:21.16.

Joseph Larson led DSU with a time of 11.39 seconds in the 100-meter dash, followed by Marshall with a time of 11.92 seconds. Larson had a time of 23.93 seconds in the 200-meters.  

Tobias Zephier clocked a personal record time of 53.85 seconds in the 400-meters.

The meet wrapped up with the 4×400-meter relay for DSU. Zephier, Schmiedt, Kassa, and Beyer finished with a time of 3:41.30 to place seventh. Kennedy, Myers, Henrie, and Harr recorded a time of 3 minutes, 52.32 seconds in the race.

Dakota State continues their busy outdoor track & field action as they begin their first day of the three-day 2023 Drake Relays. Cody Farland, Evan Slominski, Joshua Krull, and Curtis Johnson are set to compete in the 4×800-meter relay today at 4:44 p.m.
