It was a wild ride last night in women’s basketball at the DSU Fieldhouse as #14 Dakota Wesleyan survived a test from rival Dakota State 87-79. After the two sides traded buckets in the first quarter, the Tigers got hot and led 32-23 after one. Wesleyan held DSU at bay in the second quarter, maintaining a double digit lead at the break 54-40.

DSU opened up the third quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the lead but Wesleyan answered and held a 68-49 advantage with 2:45 left. The Trojans would use a 16-2 run into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 70-65 with over seven minutes left. Runs from both sides matched and DSU got within two points at 81-79 with just over a minute left, but missed shots and Tiger free throws ended the contest.

The Lady T’s amped up the defense in the second half holding the Tigers to 34% from the floor, while shooting 48%. Jessi Giles led the charge with 22 points and Morgan Koepsell poured in 17 for the DSU offense. While a tough loss, the second half was their best of the season. DSU Women, now at 2-6, will be back in action this Sunday at Briar Cliff.
