DSU Splits NSAA Season Opener Against Waldorf

In their NSAA opener yesterday, the Dakota State softball team split their doubleheader with Waldorf, winning the first game 16-7 and falling 9-5 in the second.

The Trojans got the first game of the doubleheader started, with three runs in the opening inning. That was thanks in part to Michelle Evdos hitting a 2-RBI Single. The Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, capped by 2-RBI Double from Kassidy Elyea for a 4-3 lead.

After going scoreless for the next two innings, the Trojans added five runs to the scoreboard in the fourth inning before pouring on four more runs in the fifth. DSU was able to add four more combined runs in the final two innings for the 16-7 win.

Dakota State outhit Waldorf 16-10 in the game. WU left eight runners on base compared to DSU five runners left on base.

Hannah McFarland fueled the Trojans’ offense attack with a double, three singles and drove in two runs. She scored three times. Alexus Foster added three singles, a walk, and collected three RBIs. Mackenzie Sims and Sophia Cordova each tallied two hits, two runs, and two RBIs.

Grace Ortmeier had a double, single, and an RBI for Dakota State. Carrington Entringer had a hit and an RBI. Evdos recorded a hit and two RBIs. Entringer swiped three bases for DSU. McFarland added two stolen bases.  

Brooke Hickey had a home run and an RBI for Waldorf. 

Maycee Bricker (W, 1-5) registered a complete game victory in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She allowed seven runs (two unearned) on 10 hits. 

Alex Mathers (L, 2-3) recorded the defeat for Waldorf, pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader, despite DSU opening the game with a run, Waldorf registered five runs in the bottom of the first inning and was able to control the game the rest of the way.

The Trojans added one run in each of the next two innings before tying the game up in the top of the fourth with two runs. 

With the game tied at 5-5, the Warriors had another multi-run inning, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to get the 9-5 win after the Trojans were unable to score in the seventh. 

The Warriors had nine hits compared to the Trojans eight hits. WU committed three defensive errors in the game while DSU did not record a defensive miscue.

McFarland led the Trojans by going 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single, and drove in two runs. Rebecca Hazlett added two singles and an RBI. Entringer had a double and scored twice. Evdos tallied a single. 

Kassidy Elyea had a home run and three RBIs for the Warriors. 

Mason Usselman started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State, working for two outs. Cordova (L, 1-1) took the setback after tossing five innings in relief. She gave up four runs on six hits.  Philop pitched the final out of the sixth inning.

McKenna Mentink (W, 3-3) earned the complete game victory for Waldorf. She allowed five runs (three unearned) on eight hits.

After splitting the doubleheader, the Trojans now have a 2-14 overall record, while Waldorf is now 5-11. Both teams close out the four game series this afternoon starting at 1pm.Â
