DSU Searching for Their Next Men’s Head Basketball Coach

The search for the next head coach for the Dakota State Men’s Basketball team is currently proceeding, after the recent news of Gary Garner’s retirement after this season.

Despite Garner making his decision to retire publicly on January 24th, the university was given a notice heading into this season that this would more than likely be Garner’s final year. With that knowledge, it did give DSU a bit of a head start in terms of potential candidates.

Dakota State Athletic Director, Jeff Dittman, said that within 24 hours of publishing the open job he received a number of inquiries from all over.

Dittman laid out what he is looking for in a potential candidate.

Candidates head coaching experience, or lack thereof, will not be deciding factors when deciding a hire. Dittman also mentioned the possibility of bringing in someone with DSU ties.

Another big thing that Dittman will be looking for is a coach who can both find and develop talent, while continuing to add and improve the culture.

To help make this process as seamless as possible for both current players and their recruits, the hope is that they will be ready to name a new head coach very soon after the last game of the season .
