The Dakota State Women’s Basketball team knocked off #14 Mayville State on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 84-66 win, their first at Mayville State in four years. The strong shooting performance from Friday night boiled over into Saturday, as DSU jumped out to a 28-18 advantage after the first quarter. The lead would stay at 10 points at half, after a much slower second quarter. 

After halftime, the third quarter was the Olivia Breske show, as the Sophomore poured in 13 of her game high 21 points. The Lady T’s continued to keep the Comets at arm’s length throughout the final 20 minutes, building an advantage by as much as 24 points. Dakota State handed Mayville their first conference loss and home loss of the season, plus ending Mayville State’s 11 game winning streak. Meanwhile, the DSU Women won their eighth straight game to improve to 14-12 on the season and 8-3 in NSAA play. 

Savannah Walsdorf had 19 points, Jessi Giles 18 and Sydney Fick 16 in the upset win. 

 

Our second game on Saturday featured another ranked Mayville State side, who came in 22nd, facing off against DSU in the Men’s game. After an early exchange of buckets, the host Comets held a modest lead before 5 ties in the later stages of the first half. Mayville State would end the first half with a six point lead at 43-37 and never trailed in the second half. 

The Trojans would fall behind by 10 points early in the second half, only to rally to within two, but never got any closer. Each DSU run was answered by Mayville State, who ended up with the 83-67 win. Josh McGreal had a career high 34 points on 17 of 32 shooting, Gare Ewefada finished with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. 

The DSU Men now stand at 8-18 on the season, with a 4-7 conference record. Dakota State Basketball will be back in action this weekend, hosting Dickinson State on Friday and Valley City State on Saturday.
