Another Strong Day for the DSU Mens Track and Field Team

Numerous Dakota State men’s running athletes produced personal best times in the South Dakota Challenge earlier this week.  

Local schools including host-school South Dakota, Dakota State, South Dakota State, Sioux Falls, and Dordt competed in the outdoor track & field meet.

Conner Tordsen captured the hammer throw title for the third consecutive meet (Sioux City Relays on April 14 and Red Raiders Invitational on April 21). He tossed 199 feet, 8 inches, which also met the NAIA ‘A’ automatic qualifying mark where he already did earlier this season. Jacob Joachim added a fourth-place finish with a toss of 169 feet, 9 inches.

Tordsen was the top NAIA discus thrower with the NAIA ‘A’ automatic qualifying toss of 168 feet, 7 inches. He finished as a runner-up in the event for the Trojans. Joachim added a 141 feet, 7 inches toss. 

Treshawn Roberts collected a runner-up honor in the javelin throw, registering a mark of 158 feet, 5 inches for the Trojans. 

Dakota State added another runner-up honor in the long jump, led by Ben Hoverson with a leap of 20 feet, 11.75 inches. Nathan Ingalls followed up with a leap of19 feet, 9.5 inches to place third. He was also fourth in the triple jump, leaping 40 feet, 11.75 inches.

Seven Trojan runners hit personal record times in the 1500-meter run, paced by Curtis Johnson with a time of 4 minutes, .63 seconds to finish third in the race. Evan Slominski added a sixth-place finish with a career best time of 4:04.30. Blake Schmiedt recorded a personal record time of 4:17.91, followed by Dalton Brouwer with a personal best time of 4:20.22, Yohannes Kassa with a personal record time of 4:22.22, and Ian Beyer with a personal record time of 4:25.50. Reese Henrie finished the race in 4:36.73, while Lucas Harr finished with a personal best time of 4:36.73.

Isaac Jaacks hit a personal record of 56.83 seconds to finish third in the 400-meter hurdles for DSU. Obang Ojulu followed up with a time of 58.58 seconds to place eighth, while Bryant Paulsen finished 10th in 1:04.16.

Treshawn Roberts led the Trojans with a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, hitting a personal record of 15.20 seconds. Jaacks added a personal best time of 15.88 seconds to place eighth, followed by Caleb Roberts with a personal record of 17.04 seconds. Caden Gortmaker finished with a time of 19.24 seconds. 

Trey Reindl led DSU with a time of 50.40 seconds to place fourth in the 400-meter dash. Riley Greenhoff was seventh in 51.93 seconds, followed by Joseph Larson with an eighth-place finish in 53.10 seconds. Tobias Zephier finished ninth with a personal record time of 53.88 seconds, followed by Gortmaker with a personal best time of 56.09 seconds.

Joshua Krull posted a season-best time of 1 minute, 59.27 seconds to collect a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run for Dakota State. Daniel Green followed up with a sixth-place finish with a career best time of 2:01.28. Steven Gregg was seventh in 2:01.62, followed by Dylan Hilger with a 10th place finish in 2:03.43. 

Colter Elkin clocked a career best time of 9 minutes, 49.74 seconds to place fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase for Dakota State.

Michael Foster clocked a time of 11.21 seconds to earn a fifth in the 100-meter dash.  Emmanuel Drain was 11th in 11.90 seconds, followed by Chase Marshall with a time of 12.03 seconds for a 12th-place finish.

Larson was 12th with a time of 23.46 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Caleb Roberts hit a personal record time of 23.92 seconds, followed by Marshall in 25.10 seconds, and Paulsen with a time of 25.52 seconds.

Tyler Kennedy was seventh in the 5000-meter run for the Trojans in 15 minutes, 47 seconds. Taylor Myers recorded a time of 16:00.16, followed by Martin Bailey in 16:08.90.

Foster, Treshawn Roberts, Reindl, and Greenhoff teamed up for DSU’s 4×100-meter relay, registering a time of 42.15 seconds to earn a runner-up honor.

Dakota State stays busy this week as they return to action today in the Mount Marty Twilight meet. The Trojans also will take selected members to the annual prestigious outdoor track and field meet in the 2023 Drake Relays from Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
